What Does a Carbon Accounting Specialist Do?

Carbon accounting specialists quantify greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for companies, governments, and projects. They apply internationally recognised frameworks - the GHG Protocol, ISO 14064, and the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) - to measure Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, set science-based targets, and prepare disclosures for regulators, investors, and rating agencies.

The role has moved from niche consulting to mainstream corporate necessity. The EU CSRD now requires approximately 50,000 companies to report their emissions, and the SEC’s climate disclosure rule is accelerating demand in the US. Specialists work in sustainability consultancies, Big Four accounting firms, in-house corporate teams, and climate-tech start-ups.

Salaries range from EUR 35,000 for entry-level roles to EUR 90,000–120,000 for senior professionals with GHG Protocol certification or CDP accreditation. In Europe, roles are concentrated in London, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Paris, with remote opportunities growing rapidly.

Key Responsibilities

  • Calculate Scope 1, 2, and 3 GHG emissions using the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064
  • Prepare carbon disclosures aligned with CSRD, TCFD, CDP, and SECR requirements
  • Develop science-based emission reduction targets (SBTi)
  • Build carbon accounting systems and data collection processes
  • Verify emission inventories and support third-party assurance

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Environmental Science, Accounting, or Engineering
  • GHG Protocol Certified, CDP Accredited, SBTi Practitioner
