Carbon market analysts are specialists who track, analyse, and forecast carbon credit prices and market dynamics across both compliance markets (like the EU Emissions Trading System) and voluntary carbon markets. They help companies, financial institutions, and trading firms navigate the complex and rapidly evolving world of carbon pricing, advising on trading strategies, regulatory compliance, hedging, and investment decisions.

The EU ETS, the world’s largest compliance carbon market, covers approximately 40% of EU greenhouse gas emissions and has seen carbon prices fluctuate significantly - rising from around EUR 25 per tonne in 2020 to over EUR 100 in 2023 before stabilising. The expansion of the EU ETS to maritime transport and the launch of ETS2 for buildings and road transport in 2027 are creating new market dynamics. Meanwhile, the voluntary carbon market, though smaller, is undergoing rapid professionalisation with new integrity standards from ICVCM and VCMI.

Carbon market analysts work for energy trading companies, investment banks, carbon brokers, consultancies, carbon project developers, and corporate sustainability teams. The role combines financial analysis with deep knowledge of climate policy and environmental science. Key Responsibilities

• Monitor and analyse EU ETS allowance prices, auction results, and market fundamentals
• Forecast carbon price trajectories using fundamental, technical, and quantitative models
• Advise corporate clients on carbon allowance procurement and hedging strategies
• Evaluate voluntary carbon credit quality using standards (Gold Standard, Verra VCS)
• Track regulatory developments affecting carbon markets (CBAM, ETS2, Article 6 mechanisms)
• Prepare market intelligence reports and trading recommendations for internal and external stakeholders

Required Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Economics, Finance, Environmental Economics, or Energy Policy
• Strong quantitative skills including financial modelling and statistical analysis
• Deep understanding of EU climate policy, ETS mechanics, and international carbon markets
• Proficiency in data analysis tools (Python, R, Bloomberg, Excel)
