What Does a Circular Economy Manager Do?
Circular economy managers help businesses, municipalities, and supply chains move away from the linear “take-make-dispose” model toward closed-loop systems where materials are reused, repaired, remanufactured, and recycled at their highest value. The role sits at the heart of the EU Green Deal’s Circular Economy Action Plan, which aims to halve residual waste by 2030.
Day-to-day work includes conducting material flow analyses, designing product-as-a-service and take-back programmes, advising on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) compliance, and building business cases that prove circularity can be profitable. Circular economy managers often collaborate with product designers, procurement teams, logistics partners, and regulators.
The field is growing rapidly in Europe, where the European Commission has embedded circularity into nearly every major industrial strategy. Salaries for circular economy managers range from €40,000 at entry level to over €85,000 for experienced professionals in Western Europe, with sustainability manager roles in Germany averaging around €69,000 per year.
