What Does a Climate Adaptation Planner Do?
Climate adaptation planners help communities and organisations prepare for the unavoidable impacts of climate change. While mitigation focuses on reducing emissions, adaptation addresses the consequences of warming that is already locked in. These planners assess climate vulnerabilities, develop adaptation strategies, design resilient infrastructure, implement nature-based solutions for flood and heat management, and integrate climate projections into urban and regional planning decisions.
Europe is already experiencing escalating climate impacts. The 2023 and 2024 summers brought record heat waves, devastating floods struck Central Europe, and Mediterranean droughts intensified. The EU Climate Adaptation Strategy and the European Climate Law require member states to develop and implement national adaptation strategies. Cities across Europe are hiring adaptation specialists to develop Climate Action Plans, and the insurance industry increasingly requires climate risk assessments for infrastructure investment.
Climate adaptation planners work for municipal and regional governments, environmental consultancies, engineering firms, international development organisations, and insurance companies. European salaries range from EUR 36,000 for junior planners to EUR 78,000+ for senior adaptation programme managers. The field is growing rapidly as the gap between climate impacts and preparedness becomes more visible with each extreme weather event.
