What Does an Ecological Restoration Specialist Do?
Ecological restoration specialists repair damaged ecosystems - replanting native forests, re-establishing wetland hydrology, removing invasive species, and reconstructing riparian buffers - so that degraded land and water systems can recover their biodiversity, ecological function, and resilience to climate change. They bridge science and fieldwork, using ecological data to design restoration plans and then managing on-the-ground implementation with contractors, volunteers, and landowners.
The profession is experiencing strong growth driven by landmark policy commitments. The EU Nature Restoration Law requires member states to have restoration measures in place for at least 20% of land and sea areas by 2030. The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030) has mobilised billions in global funding. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements in planning law - already mandatory in England - create commercial demand for restoration expertise alongside every major development project.
Specialists work for environmental consultancies, government agencies (such as national parks and environment agencies), conservation NGOs, and increasingly for corporations seeking nature-positive outcomes. Salaries in Europe range from EUR 30,000 for entry-level field ecologists to EUR 78,000+ for senior restoration project managers. Fieldwork is a core component of the role, often in remote or challenging terrain, though senior positions increasingly involve project management, grant writing, and policy engagement.
