What Does an Energy Storage Engineer Do?

Energy storage engineers design, test, and deploy the battery systems that make variable renewable energy reliable. As wind and solar reach record shares of the electricity mix, grid-scale storage - from lithium-ion batteries to flow batteries and emerging solid-state technologies - is essential for balancing supply and demand, providing frequency regulation, and deferring costly grid upgrades.

The work spans system design and sizing, battery management system (BMS) engineering, power electronics (inverter and converter design), thermal management, and grid integration. Engineers collaborate with utilities, developers, and technology vendors to deliver projects ranging from residential behind-the-meter batteries to 500 MWh grid-scale installations.

Energy storage is one of the fastest-growing segments in clean energy. The UK, Germany, and the Nordics are major growth regions, and nearly half of European employers in the sector raised pay in 2025. Entry-level BESS roles in the UK start at around Β£45,000, with senior engineers earning Β£65,000–£70,000. In Germany and the Netherlands, comparable ranges are €50,000–€80,000, with specialists in grid integration commanding additional premiums.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and size battery energy storage systems (BESS) for grid, commercial, and residential applications
  • Develop battery management system (BMS) specifications and integration architectures
  • Engineer power electronics solutions: inverters, converters, and grid-tie systems
  • Perform thermal modelling and design cooling strategies for battery enclosures
  • Conduct energy modelling and techno-economic analysis using HOMER, PSCAD, or MATLAB
  • Support commissioning, performance testing, and warranty management

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Energy Systems Engineering
  • Knowledge of battery chemistries (lithium-ion, flow, solid-state) and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with power electronics, inverter design, and grid codes (EN 50549)
  • Proficiency in simulation tools: MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, HOMER Energy
