What Does an Environmental Compliance Officer Do?

Environmental compliance officers ensure that organisations operate within the bounds of environmental law. They develop and maintain environmental management systems, conduct internal audits, manage permits and licences, monitor regulatory changes, investigate environmental incidents, and serve as the primary point of contact with environmental regulators. Their work protects companies from fines, prosecution, and reputational damage while driving genuine environmental improvement.

European environmental regulation has become significantly more complex and enforcement more rigorous in recent years. The Industrial Emissions Directive, REACH regulation, the EU Environmental Liability Directive, and national implementation of EU waste, water, and air quality directives create a demanding compliance landscape. Companies across manufacturing, energy, construction, chemicals, and waste management need dedicated compliance professionals to navigate these requirements.

Environmental compliance officers work in-house for industrial companies, utilities, and large corporations, or for environmental consultancies serving multiple clients. They also work within government regulatory agencies as inspectors and enforcement officers. European salaries range from EUR 36,000 for junior compliance officers to EUR 78,000+ for heads of environmental compliance at large industrial operations. The role offers stability and is relatively recession-proof, as regulatory requirements persist regardless of economic conditions.

  • Develop and maintain ISO 14001-certified environmental management systems
  • Conduct internal environmental audits and manage corrective action programmes
  • Manage environmental permits (air emissions, wastewater discharge, waste handling)
  • Monitor changes in EU and national environmental legislation and assess business impact
  • Investigate environmental incidents (spills, breaches) and implement preventive measures
