What Does an ESG Analyst Do?

ESG analysts assess companies and investment portfolios against environmental, social, and governance criteria. They translate sustainability data into financial risk signals, helping asset managers, banks, and corporations make informed decisions in a world where climate risk is increasingly treated as financial risk.

The work involves collecting and validating ESG data from corporate disclosures, rating agencies, and third-party sources; conducting materiality assessments; benchmarking performance against frameworks such as GRI, SASB, TCFD, and the EU Taxonomy; and producing research notes and investment recommendations. ESG analysts also monitor regulatory developments like the EU Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation (SFDR) and advise on portfolio alignment with Paris Agreement targets.

ESG hiring grew 40 % year-over-year between 2021 and 2023, with Europe and North America leading demand. Entry-level analysts in Europe earn €35,000–€45,000, while experienced professionals with certifications like the CFA ESG Certificate or CESGA command €70,000–€90,000 - a 25-40 % premium over non-certified peers.

Key Responsibilities

• Analyse corporate ESG disclosures and sustainability reports
• Conduct materiality assessments and ESG risk scoring

Required Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Finance, Economics, Environmental Science, or Sustainability
• Deep understanding of ESG frameworks (GRI, SASB, TCFD, EU Taxonomy)
• Strong financial analysis and modelling skills
• Excellent research, writing, and data visualisation abilities
