What Does an EV Charging Infrastructure Engineer Do?

EV charging infrastructure engineers plan, design, and deploy the charging stations that keep electric vehicles running. They work across the full project lifecycle - from site selection and grid capacity analysis to electrical design, permitting, installation supervision, and post-commissioning performance monitoring.

The role requires a blend of electrical engineering, power systems knowledge, and familiarity with EV-specific protocols such as CCS (Combined Charging System), CHAdeMO, and OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol). Engineers must also navigate local building codes, utility interconnection requirements, and increasingly complex smart-charging and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) scenarios.

The European EV charging market is expanding rapidly. The EU’s Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) mandates a public charging point every 60 km along major highways by 2025, and the global charging market is forecast to grow from $32 billion in 2024 to nearly $200 billion by 2033. This explosive growth is creating sustained, high demand for qualified engineers across Europe, with salaries ranging from €3,500 per month at entry level to over €7,000 for experienced infrastructure leads in Germany and the Netherlands.
