What Does a Geothermal Energy Engineer Do?
Geothermal energy engineers tap into the Earthβs heat to generate electricity and provide district heating. They locate underground reservoirs of hot water and steam, design extraction systems, and build power plants or heating networks that deliver reliable, weather-independent renewable energy. Unlike solar and wind, geothermal provides constant baseload power with a capacity factor exceeding 90%, making it a critical but often overlooked pillar of the energy transition.
The profession spans multiple disciplines - geology, reservoir engineering, drilling technology, thermodynamics, and power plant design. Engineers work on conventional hydrothermal systems, enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) that create artificial reservoirs in hot dry rock, and shallow geothermal systems for building heating and cooling. The EUβs REPowerEU plan and the Geothermal Energy Action Plan aim to significantly scale European geothermal capacity, particularly for district heating in countries like Germany, France, the Netherlands, and Iceland.
Market growth is accelerating as next-generation drilling technologies reduce costs and expand viable locations far beyond traditional volcanic regions. Global geothermal capacity is projected to grow from 16 GW to over 30 GW by 2030. In Europe, salaries range from EUR 38,000 for graduate geoscientists to EUR 90,000+ for senior reservoir engineers or project directors. The field offers strong job security due to the 30-to-50-year operational lifetime of geothermal assets and the growing policy push for decarbonised heating.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct geophysical surveys and geological assessments to identify viable geothermal resources
- Design and oversee drilling programmes for exploration and production wells
- Model reservoir behaviour using TOUGH2, MODFLOW, or equivalent simulation tools
- Design binary cycle, flash steam, or direct-use geothermal systems
- Manage environmental impact assessments and drilling permits
- Monitor reservoir performance and optimise extraction rates for long-term sustainability
Required Education
- Bachelorβs or Masterβs in Geological Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Energy Engineering
- Strong foundations in thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and subsurface geology
- Experience with geothermal modelling software and geophysical survey techniques
- Chartered Engineer or PE licence advantageous for project leadership
Career Development
