What Does a Green Chemistry Scientist Do?
Green chemistry scientists apply the 12 Principles of Green Chemistry to redesign chemical products and processes. They develop bio-based solvents, design catalytic reactions that reduce waste, create biodegradable materials, and reformulate products to eliminate hazardous substances - all while maintaining or improving commercial performance.
The EU REACH regulation, the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability, and growing consumer demand for non-toxic products are driving investment in green chemistry R&D. The field intersects with pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, agriculture, plastics, and advanced materials.
Salaries range from EUR 36,000 for postdoctoral researchers to EUR 90,000+ for R&D directors in chemical companies. Key employers include BASF, Evonik, Solvay, Novozymes, and a growing ecosystem of bio-based materials start-ups.
Key Responsibilities
- Design chemical processes that minimise hazardous reagents and waste
- Develop bio-based, renewable, and biodegradable alternatives to petrochemicals
- Conduct life cycle assessments of chemical products and processes
- Ensure compliance with REACH, RoHS, and GHS regulations
- Scale laboratory innovations to pilot and commercial production
- Collaborate with product design teams on safer formulations
Required Education
- Masterβs or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science
- Specialisation in green chemistry, catalysis, or bio-based materials
- Laboratory skills and experience with analytical instrumentation
- Knowledge of EU chemical regulations (REACH, CLP, RoHS)
