What Does a Green Hydrogen Engineer Do?

Green hydrogen engineers design, build, and optimise systems that produce hydrogen through water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. Unlike grey hydrogen (from natural gas) or blue hydrogen (with carbon capture), green hydrogen is fully emission-free, making it a cornerstone of the EU’s plan to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors such as steel, chemicals, shipping, and heavy transport.

The work spans the entire hydrogen value chain: electrolyser selection and sizing (PEM, alkaline, or solid oxide), balance-of-plant engineering, integration with wind and solar assets, hydrogen storage and compression, pipeline transport, and fuelling station design. Engineers must balance thermodynamic efficiency, capital cost, and safety in every decision.

The EU has committed to producing 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030, backed by billions in funding through the Hydrogen Strategy, Horizon Europe, and the Innovation Fund. This has triggered a wave of hiring. In Germany - Europe’s largest hydrogen market - renewable energy engineers earn €60,000 to €80,000, with specialists in electrolyser technology commanding a 10-20 % premium. Hubs in Hamburg, Munich, and the Netherlands offer the most opportunities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and size electrolyser systems (PEM, alkaline, SOEC) for green hydrogen production
  • Integrate hydrogen production with renewable energy sources (wind, solar)
  • Engineer balance-of-plant systems including purification, compression, and storage
  • Conduct process simulation, thermodynamic modelling, and techno-economic analysis
  • Ensure compliance with hydrogen safety standards (ATEX, PED, ISO/TC 197)
  • Support commissioning, performance testing, and operational optimisation

Required Education

  • Master’s in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Electrochemistry
  • Knowledge of electrolyser technologies and hydrogen thermodynamics
  • Experience with process simulation tools (Aspen Plus, HYSYS, MATLAB)
  • Understanding of EU Hydrogen Strategy, RED II additionality rules, and safety regulations
