What Does a Green Software Engineer Do?

Green software engineers design and build applications that consume the minimum necessary energy and produce the lowest possible carbon emissions. They apply principles of carbon-aware computing - shifting workloads to times and regions where the electricity grid is cleanest - alongside traditional performance optimisation, efficient algorithm design, and right-sized cloud infrastructure to dramatically reduce the environmental impact of software.

Key Responsibilities

Required Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or Information Technology
• Green Software Foundation Practitioner certification or equivalent training
• Strong software development skills in one or more languages (Python, Rust, Go, Java)
• Understanding of cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and infrastructure-as-code
