What Does a Lifecycle Assessment Analyst Do?

Lifecycle assessment (LCA) analysts quantify the environmental footprint of products and services across their entire lifecycle - from raw material extraction and manufacturing through use and end-of-life disposal or recycling. They apply the ISO 14040/14044 methodology and specialised software to calculate impacts such as carbon emissions, water use, eutrophication, and resource depletion, providing the evidence base for sustainable product design, green procurement, and regulatory compliance.

LCA has evolved from an academic exercise into a business-critical capability. The EU Green Claims Directive will require companies to substantiate environmental marketing claims with robust lifecycle data. The Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) methodology is becoming the EU standard for comparative assertions. Meanwhile, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are increasingly mandatory in construction, packaging, and electronics. These regulatory drivers have created surging demand for LCA professionals in manufacturing, consulting, retail, and public procurement.

Analysts work for sustainability consultancies, manufacturing companies (FMCG, automotive, chemicals, construction), certification bodies, and research institutions. They collaborate with product designers, supply chain managers, and marketing teams to identify environmental hotspots and optimise products. European salaries range from EUR 36,000 for junior analysts to EUR 90,000+ for senior practitioners leading LCA programmes or managing EPD processes. The combination of technical rigour and strategic influence makes this a highly rewarding career path.

  • Conduct full lifecycle assessments following ISO 14040/14044 methodology
  • Model product systems in SimaPro, GaBi, or openLCA software
  • Calculate and interpret impact categories (climate change, acidification, resource depletion, etc.)
  • Prepare Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Product Environmental Footprints (PEFs)
  • Identify environmental hotspots and recommend eco-design improvements
  • Perform critical reviews and data quality assessments for third-party verification

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or Industrial Ecology
  • Proficiency in LCA software (SimaPro, GaBi, or openLCA)
  • Thorough understanding of ISO 14040/14044 and EU PEF methodology
  • Strong quantitative skills and database management experience

Career Development

  1. Junior LCA Analyst / Research Assistant - data collection, inventory modelling, and report drafting (0-2 yr.)
  2. Lifecycle Assessment Analyst - independent LCA studies and EPD preparation (2-5 yr.)
  3. Senior LCA Specialist / Team Lead - complex multi-product assessments and critical reviews (5-8 yr.)
  4. Head of LCA / Director of Sustainable Products - methodology development, corporate strategy, and policy engagement (8+ yr.)
