What Does an Offshore Wind Engineer Do?
Offshore wind engineers design, build, and operate wind farms located in seas and oceans, where stronger and more consistent winds generate significantly more electricity than onshore sites. They work on every aspect of these complex marine infrastructure projects - from wind resource assessment and turbine foundation design to subsea cable routing, installation logistics, and lifetime operations and maintenance.
Offshore wind is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the energy transition. The EU has set a target of 300 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2050 (up from approximately 30 GW today), and the UK alone aims for 50 GW by 2030. This expansion is creating massive demand for engineers: UK offshore wind jobs are projected to grow by 100,000 by 2030. Major development hubs include the North Sea (UK, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany), the Baltic Sea, and emerging markets in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.
The role is technically demanding, combining structural, electrical, marine, and geotechnical engineering disciplines. Engineers must account for extreme wave loads, seabed conditions, corrosion, and the logistical challenges of working 50-150 km from shore. Salaries reflect this complexity: European offshore wind engineers earn from EUR 42,000 for graduate positions to EUR 108,000+ for senior project managers or principal engineers. Offshore allowances and rotation bonuses can add significantly to base compensation.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct wind resource assessments and energy yield analyses for proposed farm sites
- Design turbine foundations (monopile, jacket, floating) accounting for wave, current, and seabed conditions
- Plan subsea cable routes and offshore substation configurations
- Manage marine installation campaigns including vessel coordination and weather-window planning
- Oversee commissioning, operational monitoring, and predictive maintenance programmes
- Ensure compliance with DNV standards, maritime safety regulations, and environmental permits
Required Education
- Bachelorβs or Masterβs in Mechanical, Civil, Marine, or Renewable Energy Engineering
- GWO Basic Safety Training (mandatory for offshore site access)
- Understanding of DNV-GL standards, marine survey techniques, and geotechnical analysis
- Chartered Engineer status beneficial for career progression
Career Development
- Graduate Offshore Wind Engineer - analysis support, site visits, and technical documentation (0-2 yr.)
- Offshore Wind Engineer - independent design, construction supervision, and stakeholder coordination (2-5 yr.)
- Senior Engineer / Project Manager - multi-disciplinary project leadership and contract management (5-8 yr.)
- Principal Engineer / Head of Offshore Wind - portfolio strategy, technology selection, and executive advisory (8+ yr.)
