What Does a Renewable Energy Project Manager Do?

Renewable energy project managers oversee the entire lifecycle of wind, solar, battery storage, and other clean energy projects. From initial feasibility studies and securing planning permission through to construction management, grid connection, and handover to operations, they coordinate engineers, contractors, regulators, landowners, and investors to deliver projects on time and on budget. They are the central coordinators who turn renewable energy ambitions into operational reality.

Europe’s clean energy targets are unprecedented in scale. The REPowerEU plan targets over 600 GW of solar and accelerated wind deployment by 2030. Achieving these targets requires delivering thousands of new renewable energy projects across the continent, each needing skilled project management. The pipeline of consented and planned projects far exceeds the available project management workforce, making this one of the most in-demand roles in the entire green economy.

Renewable energy project managers work for energy developers, utilities, independent power producers, EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) contractors, and project management consultancies. European salaries range from EUR 48,000 for junior project managers to EUR 102,000+ for senior PMs managing large-scale or multi-project portfolios. The role combines technical knowledge with commercial acumen and leadership skills, offering a dynamic career with high responsibility and visible impact.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage project timelines, budgets, and resources from feasibility through commissioning
• Coordinate planning applications, environmental impact assessments, and permit acquisition
• Oversee procurement of turbines, panels, inverters, and balance-of-plant equipment
• Supervise construction activities and ensure compliance with quality, safety, and environmental standards
• Manage grid connection processes and power purchase agreement negotiations
• Report project progress and risk status to investors, boards, and senior management

Required Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Engineering, Energy Management, or Project Management
• PMP or PRINCE2 certification
• Understanding of renewable energy technologies and grid infrastructure
• Health and safety qualifications relevant to construction projects
