What Does a Solar PV Installer Do?
Solar PV installers are the skilled tradespeople who physically install photovoltaic systems on rooftops, ground mounts, and carports. They handle everything from structural assessment and mounting rail installation to electrical wiring, inverter setup, battery storage integration, and system commissioning. As Europe races to meet its REPowerEU target of over 600 GW of solar capacity by 2030, PV installers are among the most sought-after workers in the green economy.
Europe installed a record 65 GW of new solar capacity in 2024, and annual deployment is expected to grow further. This explosive growth has created a severe skills shortage - the European Solar Industry estimates that over 100,000 additional installation professionals are needed across the continent. Many EU member states now offer subsidised training programmes and fast-track certification pathways to address this gap.
Solar PV installers work for solar installation companies, electrical contractors, energy utilities, and increasingly as self-employed specialists. The role is physically demanding, involving rooftop work, lifting panels, and outdoor conditions. European earnings range from EUR 26,400 for newly qualified installers to EUR 54,000+ for experienced team leaders or those specialising in commercial and utility-scale projects. The career offers strong job security and clear progression into supervisory and design roles.
