What Does a Sustainability Data Analyst Do?

Sustainability data analysts bridge the gap between raw environmental and social data and actionable business intelligence. They collect data on energy consumption, emissions, water use, waste, workforce diversity, and supply chain impacts, then transform it into clear metrics, dashboards, and reports that drive corporate sustainability strategies and regulatory compliance.

The EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which began phasing in from 2024, now requires approximately 50,000 European companies to report detailed sustainability data according to European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). This regulation, combined with growing investor demand for ESG transparency and the EU Taxonomy for sustainable activities, has created explosive demand for professionals who can manage and analyse sustainability data at scale.

Sustainability data analysts work for corporations (in sustainability or CSR teams), management consultancies, ESG rating agencies, financial institutions, and specialist sustainability software companies. The role sits at the intersection of data science and sustainability knowledge. European salaries range from EUR 36,000 for junior analysts to EUR 78,000+ for senior data leads or those with specialised CSRD expertise. The field offers excellent growth potential as sustainability reporting becomes increasingly data-intensive and technology-driven.

Key Responsibilities

• Collect and validate environmental data (energy, emissions, water, waste) from operational sites and supply chains
• Build automated data pipelines and dashboards for ongoing sustainability performance tracking
• Prepare CSRD-compliant sustainability reports aligned with ESRS and GRI Standards
• Analyse carbon footprint data across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions
• Support materiality assessments by analysing stakeholder data and industry benchmarks
• Develop KPIs and visualisations that communicate sustainability progress to leadership and investors

Required Education

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Data Science, Statistics, Environmental Science, or related field
• Strong proficiency in Python or R, SQL, and data visualisation tools (Power BI, Tableau)
• Understanding of sustainability reporting frameworks (GRI, ESRS, SASB, CDP)
• Familiarity with carbon accounting methodologies and ESG data platforms
