What Does a Sustainability Reporting Manager Do?
Sustainability reporting managers own the end-to-end process of producing an organisationβs sustainability disclosures - the structured reports that communicate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance to investors, regulators, employees, and the public. They translate complex ESG data into clear narratives and auditable metrics aligned with rapidly evolving standards such as the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB).
This role has moved from a communications exercise to a compliance-critical function. The EU CSRD, which came into force in 2024, requires approximately 50,000 companies to publish detailed sustainability reports audited to limited assurance standards - comparable to financial reporting. The demand for qualified reporting professionals has surged, with sustainability reporting job postings increasing 29% year-on-year globally.
Reporting managers work in corporate sustainability teams, Big Four and mid-tier accounting firms, ESG consultancies, and investor-relations departments. They coordinate across finance, operations, HR, and supply chain to collect data, run double materiality assessments, and prepare disclosures that withstand third-party assurance. Salaries in Europe range from EUR 38,000 for junior reporting analysts to EUR 90,000+ for senior managers leading multi-entity reporting programmes. Strong demand exists in financial centres such as Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Paris.
