What Does a Sustainable Supply Chain Manager Do?
Sustainable supply chain managers integrate environmental and social responsibility into every stage of the supply chain. They develop sustainable procurement policies, audit suppliers on ESG criteria, reduce supply chain carbon emissions (Scope 3), implement circular economy principles in logistics and packaging, ensure compliance with human rights and environmental due diligence regulations, and drive continuous improvement across supplier networks.
Scope 3 supply chain emissions typically account for over 70% of a companyβs total carbon footprint, making supply chain decarbonisation the single biggest lever most organisations have for reducing their climate impact. The EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the German Supply Chain Act now legally require large companies to identify and mitigate environmental and human rights risks throughout their value chains. These regulations, combined with growing consumer and investor pressure, have elevated sustainable supply chain management from a niche concern to a boardroom priority.
Sustainable supply chain managers work for large corporations (in procurement, operations, or sustainability teams), management consultancies, logistics companies, and retail organisations. European salaries range from EUR 42,000 for junior sustainability procurement specialists to EUR 90,000+ for heads of sustainable supply chain at major corporations. The role is ideal for professionals who want to combine commercial supply chain expertise with genuine environmental and social impact.
