What Does a Sustainable Transport Planner Do?
Sustainable transport planners design mobility systems that move people and goods efficiently while minimising carbon emissions, air pollution, noise, and land consumption. They develop strategies that shift travel from private cars to public transit, cycling, and walking, while integrating electric vehicles, shared mobility, and smart traffic management into coherent urban and regional transport networks.
Transport is responsible for approximately 25% of EU greenhouse gas emissions, and road transport accounts for the vast majority of that share. The EU Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy aims for a 90% reduction in transport emissions by 2050, requiring fundamental changes to how cities and regions plan movement. This policy ambition is driving unprecedented demand for planners who combine technical transport modelling skills with sustainability expertise and community engagement capability.
Planners work for local and regional government transport authorities, transport consultancies, infrastructure developers, and international organisations. They produce local transport plans, cycling strategy documents, bus rapid transit feasibility studies, low-emission zone designs, and EV charging network plans. European salaries range from EUR 34,000 for graduate planners to EUR 78,000+ for senior principals or heads of transport strategy. The role offers strong job security as every city in Europe is now required to develop Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs), creating a steady pipeline of planning work.
