What Does an Urban Sustainability Planner Do?
Urban sustainability planners shape how cities grow, adapt, and decarbonise. They develop comprehensive sustainability plans, design green infrastructure projects (urban forests, bioswales, green roofs), promote sustainable transport networks, and ensure that urban development is equitable, resilient, and low-carbon.
With 75% of Europeans living in urban areas, cities are both the source of major emissions and the testing ground for climate solutions. The EU Mission on Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities aims to deliver 100 climate-neutral cities by 2030, creating strong demand for planners who can translate sustainability ambitions into actionable urban policy.
Salaries range from EUR 34,000 for junior planners to EUR 78,000+ for senior sustainability leads in municipal governments or large consultancies. The role is found in city councils, planning departments, architecture firms, NGOs, and international development organisations.
