What Does a Wind Turbine Technician Do?
Wind turbine technicians are the skilled hands-on professionals who keep wind turbines generating electricity. They perform scheduled maintenance, diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults, inspect and repair blades, maintain hydraulic and lubrication systems, and use condition monitoring data to predict and prevent failures. The work involves climbing towers up to 150+ metres, working in confined nacelles, and for offshore technicians, operating from specialist vessels or helicopter transfers.
Europeβs installed wind capacity exceeded 270 GW in 2024, with targets to more than double this by 2030. Every installed turbine requires regular maintenance throughout its 25-30 year operational life. WindEurope estimates that the European wind sector needs to recruit over 100,000 additional workers by 2030, with turbine technicians among the most critically short roles. The growth of offshore wind, where maintenance is more complex and higher-paid, is creating particularly strong demand.
Wind turbine technicians work for turbine manufacturers (Vestas, Siemens Gamesa, Nordex, Enercon), independent service providers, and wind farm owner-operators. European salaries range from EUR 30,000 for newly qualified technicians to EUR 66,000+ for experienced offshore technicians or team supervisors. Offshore roles typically command a 30-50% premium. The career offers strong job security, travel opportunities, and the satisfaction of directly contributing to clean energy generation.
