Biochar

A carbon-rich solid produced by heating organic biomass in a low-oxygen environment, used as a soil amendment to improve fertility, retain water, and sequester carbon for centuries.

Biochar is a stable, porous form of charcoal produced through pyrolysis - the thermal decomposition of organic matter (such as wood waste, crop residues, or manure) at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. When added to soil, biochar can persist for hundreds to thousands of years, effectively locking carbon out of the atmosphere.

Benefits

  • Soil improvement: Biochar increases soil water retention, cation exchange capacity, and microbial activity, boosting crop yields especially in degraded or sandy soils.
  • Carbon sequestration: Converting biomass to biochar prevents the carbon from returning to the atmosphere through decomposition, making it a recognized carbon dioxide removal (CDR) method.
