Green Infrastructure
A strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas, features, and systems - including parks, wetlands, green roofs, urban forests, and permeable surfaces - designed to deliver ecosystem services while enhancing biodiversity and community well-being.
InfrastructureGreen infrastructure represents a fundamentally different approach to infrastructure development compared to conventional βgrey infrastructureβ (pipes, concrete channels, treatment plants). Rather than replacing natural systems with engineered solutions, green infrastructure works with natural processes to deliver services such as stormwater management, air purification, temperature regulation, flood mitigation, and habitat provision.
The EU adopted its Green Infrastructure Strategy in 2013, defining it as βa strategically planned network of natural and semi-natural areas with other environmental features, designed and managed to deliver a wide range of ecosystem services.β
Types
- Urban green spaces: Parks, gardens, urban forests, allotments
- Green roofs and living walls: Vegetated building surfaces that provide insulation, absorb rainwater, reduce urban heat, and support biodiversity
- Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS): Rain gardens, bioswales, permeable pavements, and retention ponds
- Wetlands and waterways: Natural or constructed wetlands that filter water, store floodwater, and provide habitat
- Green corridors: River corridors, greenways, tree-lined streets, and hedgerows that connect habitats and facilitate wildlife movement

Why It Matters
