Circular Economy Product Designer

About the Position

Fairphone is a Dutch social enterprise that designs and produces smartphones with a focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing. The company is a pioneer in modular phone design, making devices that are easy to repair and upgrade, extending product lifespan and reducing electronic waste. Fairphone uses recycled and fair-trade materials across its supply chain.

As a Circular Economy Product Designer, you will contribute to the design of Fairphone’s next-generation devices with a focus on circularity, repairability, and material efficiency. You will work at the intersection of industrial design, engineering, and sustainability.

Responsibilities

• Design modular components and assemblies optimized for disassembly, repair, and recycling
• Conduct design for environment (DfE) assessments and integrate eco-design criteria into the product development process
• Collaborate with engineering and supply chain teams to identify and qualify recycled and responsibly sourced materials
• Develop prototypes and conduct user testing for repair and maintenance workflows
• Contribute to Fairphone’s circular economy strategy and product sustainability reporting

• Designing the next generation of modular, repairable smartphones
• Increasing recycled content in Fairphone products while maintaining performance and quality
• Developing design guidelines for circularity that can be shared across the electronics industry
