Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism

A carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) is a policy tool that places a carbon price on imported goods based on their embedded greenhouse gas emissions. It aims to prevent carbon leakage, where companies relocate production to countries with weaker climate policies. The EU's CBAM, phasing in from 2026, is the most prominent example.
