Renewable energy technicians are the hands-on workforce that makes the energy transition physically possible. While engineers design renewable energy systems and project managers coordinate their deployment, technicians are the professionals who climb wind turbines, wire solar panels, commission inverters, and troubleshoot faults.

The role encompasses multiple specializations. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technicians focus on solar panel systems. Wind turbine technicians (β€œwindtechs”) maintain wind turbine components. Others specialize in battery storage, small-scale hydroelectric, or heat pump installations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Installing renewable energy equipment (solar panels, inverters, mounting structures, wiring, wind turbine components) in compliance with building codes and electrical standards
  • Performing regular inspections, preventive maintenance, and performance testing
  • Diagnosing and repairing electrical and mechanical faults
  • Monitoring system performance using remote monitoring tools and on-site diagnostics
  • Ensuring all work complies with safety standards, electrical codes, and manufacturer specifications
  • Documenting maintenance activities, test results, and system performance data

Required Skills

Every solar farm, rooftop installation, and wind park requires qualified technicians for its entire operational lifetime - typically 25 to 30 years.
