Sustainability Manager

The corporate sustainability manager is an in-house leadership role responsible for ensuring that a company’s operations align with its sustainability commitments and external regulatory requirements. Unlike a sustainability consultant who advises from the outside, the sustainability manager works within an organization, embedding sustainability into its culture, processes, supply chain, and decision-making structures.

What once might have been a peripheral “corporate social responsibility” function has become a strategic management position with direct relevance to risk management, regulatory compliance, investor relations, and brand reputation. In many large organizations, the sustainability manager reports to a Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO) or directly to the C-suite.

Key Responsibilities

• Developing a comprehensive corporate sustainability strategy with goals, targets, and KPIs
• Conducting materiality assessments to identify the most significant ESG issues
• Preparing sustainability reports in accordance with recognized frameworks (GRI, SASB, CDP, EU CSRD)
• Generating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reports and managing carbon accounting
• Working cross-functionally with supply chain, procurement, HR, operations, and finance to integrate sustainable practices
• Monitoring and ensuring compliance with environmental laws and voluntary standards
• Designing and delivering internal training programs on sustainability
• Engaging with external stakeholders including investors, regulators, NGOs, and community groups

Required Skills

• Deep knowledge of environmental science, climate policy, and sustainability frameworks
• Expertise in ESG reporting standards and carbon accounting methodologies (GHG Protocol)
• Strong project management and cross-functional coordination skills
• Leadership and interpersonal skills to influence organizational culture
• Understanding of EU directives such as the CSRD and the EU Taxonomy
• Analytical ability to interpret complex data and translate it into strategic recommendations
