Senior Embedded Software Engineer
About the Position
IONATE is building intelligent power transformers that will underpin the smart grid infrastructure needed for a fully decarbonized energy system. Our technology enables real-time power flow control, improved grid resilience, and seamless integration of renewable energy - hardware and software working together to accelerate the energy transition. As Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you will develop the embedded software that runs at the heart of IONATEβs grid-edge hardware.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain embedded software for IONATEβs intelligent transformer platform
- Implement real-time control algorithms for power electronics systems
- Develop firmware for communication protocols used in grid infrastructure (IEC 61850, Modbus, DNP3)
- Collaborate with hardware engineers on system bring-up, testing, and validation
- Contribute to the embedded software architecture and define best practices for a growing engineering team
What Youβll Work On
You will write software that runs inside grid infrastructure - the transformers and switching equipment that control how power flows through the electricity network. This is deep, complex, safety-critical embedded engineering that directly enables more renewable energy to reach homes and businesses.
This is a hybrid role based in London, within a high-caliber startup tackling one of the hardest infrastructure challenges of the energy transition.
Requirements
- 6+ years of experience in embedded software development for power electronics, grid infrastructure, or industrial control systems - Proficiency in C/C++ for real-time embedded systems - Experience with real-time operating systems (RTOS) and bare-metal programming - Familiarity with grid communication protocols (IEC 61850, Modbus, or DNP3 preferred) - Understanding of power electronics and energy system fundamentals
What They Offer
- Competitive salary and meaningful equity in a deep-tech climate startup - Hybrid work with flexibility between home and London office - Opportunity to build software for a genuinely novel and impactful grid technology - Collaborative, world-class engineering team - Career-defining role in a company at the cutting edge of smart grid infrastructure
