Types of EVs

  • BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle): Fully electric, no combustion engine (e.g., Tesla Model 3, Nissan Leaf).
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid): Combines an electric motor with a combustion engine; can run on battery alone for short distances.
  • FCEV (Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle): Uses hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity on-board (e.g., Toyota Mirai).

Charging Infrastructure

  • Level 1: Standard household outlet (~5 km range per hour of charging).
  • Level 2: Dedicated 240V charger (~40 km per hour).
  • DC Fast Charging: High-power chargers (~300 km in 30 minutes).

Market Growth

Global EV sales exceeded 17 million units in 2024, representing over 20% of new car sales. The EU aims to ban new combustion engine cars by 2035. China, Europe, and the US lead EV adoption.
