Climate Data Scientist
About the Position
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an intergovernmental organization producing global numerical weather predictions and managing the Copernicus Climate Change Service on behalf of the EU. ECMWF’s data products are used by governments, researchers, and businesses worldwide for climate risk assessment and adaptation planning.
As a Climate Data Scientist, you will develop and deliver climate data products and services through the Copernicus Climate Data Store. You will work with cutting-edge climate models and observational datasets to produce actionable climate information for decision-makers across Europe.
Responsibilities
- Develop climate indicators and datasets for the Copernicus Climate Data Store
- Apply statistical and machine learning methods to bias-correct and downscale climate projections
- Build data processing pipelines for large-scale climate datasets
- Collaborate with climate scientists and software engineers on product development
- Engage with users to understand their data needs and improve service delivery
What You’ll Work On
- Creating sector-specific climate impact indicators (energy, agriculture, health)
- Developing AI-enhanced tools for climate projection analysis and visualization
- Processing and quality-controlling satellite-derived climate data records
- Contributing to ECMWF’s climate reanalysis products
Requirements
- PhD or MSc in Climate Science, Atmospheric Physics, Data Science, or related field
- Experience with large-scale climate datasets (ERA5, CMIP6)
- Strong programming skills in Python with scientific computing libraries (xarray, pandas, dask)
- Experience with machine learning applied to geophysical data
- Excellent scientific writing and presentation skills
