Conservation Data Engineer
About the Position
Wildlife Insights is a cloud-based platform developed in partnership with Google, Conservation International, and leading conservation organizations. The platform uses AI and computer vision to analyze camera trap images from around the world, enabling researchers and conservationists to monitor wildlife populations at unprecedented scale.
As a Conservation Data Engineer, you will build and maintain the data infrastructure that powers Wildlife Insightsβ global biodiversity monitoring platform. You will work with massive datasets of camera trap images and species occurrence records to support conservation decision-making worldwide.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain scalable data pipelines for ingesting, processing, and serving camera trap data
- Optimize data storage and query performance for millions of wildlife observation records
- Build APIs and data services for researchers, conservation practitioners, and policy makers
- Collaborate with machine learning engineers to integrate AI species identification models
- Ensure data quality, integrity, and compliance with biodiversity data standards (Darwin Core)

- Scaling the platform to handle growing volumes of camera trap data from global partners
- Building real-time dashboards for monitoring wildlife population trends
- Integrating satellite and environmental datasets to enrich wildlife observation data
- Supporting open data initiatives that make biodiversity data accessible to researchers worldwide
Requirements
- BSc or MSc in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Environmental Informatics, or related field
- 3-5 years of experience in data engineering or backend development
- Proficiency in Python and SQL, with experience building data pipelines (Apache Airflow, dbt, or similar)
- Experience with cloud platforms (GCP preferred) and big data technologies
- Interest in conservation biology and biodiversity monitoring
